Vintage Masters of the Universe Test Shots & Prototypes
Many pieces from my collection were featured in Lee's Action Figure News & Toy Review #96 in October 2000. I purchased these test shots before they were published in the magazine. While supplies last I will include an original copy of Lee's #96 with each vintage test shot purchase!
 Vintage MOTU Grizzlor Test Shot #1 |
This is a vintage Test Shot Grizzlor Figure from Mattel's original Masters of the Universe toy line from the 1980's. He is unpainted and is cast in 2 different flesh colors. The brown fur is the correct color but is made of a different material than the production version. He has "2" written in marker on the bottom of his right foot. His chest armor is cast in yellow and is marked "Mattel Inc U.S.A 1984". He also came with a Hordak bat that is cast in a translucent clear plastic and is marked "U.S.A.".
All of his joints work properly. His legs are tight and he stands on his own with some careful balancing. |

This is a vintage Test Shot Grizzlor Figure from Mattel's original Masters of the Universe toy line from the 1980's. He comes in the original bag that he was sent to Mattel in, sealed with 2 staples a folded piece of paper.
He is unpainted with a white face and light tan limbs. The brown fur is the correct color but is made of a different material than the production version. His chest armor is cast in yellow and is marked "Mattel Inc U.S.A 1984". He also came with a Hordak bat that is cast in a translucent clear plastic and is marked "U.S.A.". |

This is a vintage Test Shot Dragon Blaster Skeletor Figure from Mattel's original Masters of the Universe toy line from the 1980's.
He is unpainted and cast in blue, black and purple plastic. He is marked "Mattel Inc 1984 Mexico" on the back of his torso. He has "10" written in marker on the bottom of his right foot. His dragon chest armor is cast in red and purple and is marked "Mattel Inc 1984 Mexico". It is painted very differently from the production version and has "30" written in marker in a few spots. It also comes with the hand cuff, lock and silver chain. All of his joints work properly. His legs are tight and he stands on his own with ease. |

This is a vintage Test Shot Dragon Blaster Skeletor Figure from Mattel's original Masters of the Universe toy line from the 1980's.
He is unpainted and cast in blue, black and purple plastic. He is marked "Mattel Inc 1984 Mexico" on the back of his torso. He has "14" written in marker on the bottom of his right foot. His dragon chest armor is cast in red, blue and purple and is marked "Mattel Inc 1984 Mexico". The front is painted with a light purple, has some yellow paint speckles on the inside, and has "7" written in marker on the front. It also comes with the hand cuff, lock and silver chain. All of his joints work properly. His legs are tight and he stands on his own with ease. |

He is painted but is cast in orange, light purple, dark purple, blue, and black plastic. His face, silver spike, belt, and boots are painted. His spiked club is cast in orange plastic and marked "Malaysia" (and may or may not have been cast with the hand gaurd- it is hard to tell if it was cast without or removed later). He is marked "Mattel Inc, 1984 Malaysia" on his back. He has "13" written in marker on the bottom of his right foot. All of his joints work properly and his waist mechanism works. His legs are tight and he stands on his own. |

This is a vintage Test Shot Mekaneck Figure from Mattel's original Masters of the Universe toy line from the 1980's.
This painted Mattel Sample figure came from the same large collection of Test Shots and comes with a test shot Jitsu chest armor. The figure is painted similar to the production version but the mold has a weird anomaly on the back of his helmet. He comes with Webstor's arms. There is also some tape residue on the figures back. He is marked "Mattel Inc 1983 Malaysia" on his torso and "Mattel Inc 1983" on his helmet. The Jistu chest armor is cast in a flesh color and is unmarked. All of his joints work properly and his neck mechanism works perfectly. His legs are tight and he stands on his own with ease. |

 Vintage MOTU Thunder Punch He-Man #1 Test Shot |
This is a vintage Test Shot Thunder Punch He-Man Figure from Mattel's original Masters of the Universe toy line from the 1980's.
He is unpainted and cast in the correct tan, brown and red colors. He is marked "Mattel Inc, 1984 Mexico" on the back of his torso. This back piece has a solid bar across the bottom back, which differs from the other TP He-Man test shot I also have. All of his joints work properly and his cap mechanism seems functional. He does not come with any weapons. The inside of his Thunder Punch Back pack does have some corrosion. |

This is a vintage Test Shot Thunder Punch He-Man Figure from Mattel's original Masters of the Universe toy line from the 1980's.

This is a vintage Test Shot Hordak Figure from Mattel's original Masters of the Universe toy line from the 1980's.
He is unpainted and is cast in off-white and black plastic with limbs & head cast in a translucent white rubber. He is marked "Mattel Inc, 1981 Mexico" on his back. His chest armor is cast in off-white plastic and is marked "Mattel Inc 1984 U.S.A". The bat is cast in a translucent red color and is unmarked. All of his joints work properly and his waist mechanism works. His legs are tight and he stands on his own with some careful balancing. The tabs on the armor are unbroken. |

 Vintage MOTU Test Clawful Shot |
This is a vintage Mock-Up Test Shot Clawful Figure from Mattel's original Masters of the Universe toy line from the 1980's. This particular piece used existing pieces from Buzz-Off as well as new pieces for Clawful.
This Mattel Mock-Up Test Shot Sample figure is very unique. He was made using a Buzz-Off left arm and both legs (with hand painted boots). The stock 1981 chest and crotch pieces were also used. The Clawful head and right claw arm are the only newly molded pieces for this figure. Amazingly there is an alternate right claw that is just a painted Buzz-Off right arm! He is marked "Mattel Inc 1981 Hong Kong" on his torso. He is cast in a much lighter He-Man flesh color rather than the darker Clawful production color. He has "#3" written in marker on the bottom of his right foot and the back part of his chest armor. His waist spring mechanism works perfectly. He can stand on his own. His left shoulder/ arm nub is broken. It can be re-glued but I did not want to alter this prototype in any way. |

This is a vintage Test Shot Snout Spout Figure from Mattel's original Masters of the Universe toy line from the 1980's.
This hand painted Mattel Test Shot Sample figure has an pre-production version of the elephant trunk that has a different end. He is marked "Mattel Inc 1985" on his head. His ears were cast in blue but the fronts were painted black. A lot of the paint discolored and is now a funky purple color on his hands and legs. All of his joints work properly and his water-pumping mechanism appears to work. He can stand on his own. This particular piece appears to have been used to test some paint colors and schemes, either at the factory or at Mattel. It is also interesting to note that the trunk design was modified sometime after this piece. |

This is an unpainted test shot Turbodactyl dinosaur. The dinosaur is cast in brown. The engines are cast in silver/ gray. It is marked "Mattel Inc 1986 Mexico". The clip inside the head to hold the top jaw piece in place is stressed and will need to be re-glued. |
